Ordering custom-made mirrors online often takes just a few minutes. What happens afterwards, however, is a mystery to many. How is the price calculated? How does a large sheet of glass arrive in one piece? And what happens if the mirror doesn't fit after all?
This guide answers exactly those questions. It begins where other guides leave off: at the click of the "Order" button.
Online retail continues to grow. The German Retail Federation (HDE) expects an increase in online sales of 4.3% for 2026 (HDE). However, custom glass comes with its own set of rules. After all, a mirror is not a T-shirt that you can simply send back.
Still in the planning stage? Our complete buyer’s guide for custom mirrors explains which type of mirror to choose, what thickness you need, and how to measure correctly. This guide covers everything that matters from the moment you place your order.
What are custom-made mirrors from an online shop?
Custom-made mirrors from an online shop are only cut to your desired dimensions after you place your order and are delivered with finished edges. They are not stock items, but custom pieces with specific rules regarding pricing, shipping, and returns.
This distinction is important. Stock items sit on a shelf. A custom mirror, on the other hand, is only created once you enter your specifications. This results in three key differences:
- Price: It is based on your dimensions, not a fixed catalog price.
- Shipping: Format and weight determine the shipping method.
- Returns: The legal right of withdrawal generally does not apply.
Demand for such solutions is high. The Federal Association for E-Commerce and Mail Order Business reported online sales of around 5.6 billion euros for the furniture, lamps, and decoration product category in 2025, an increase of 3.3% (bevh).
Configuring mirrors online: How does the ordering process work?
At Adamer, you can order your custom mirror in six steps:
- Select mirror type: for example, the classic silver mirror or an antique mirror with patina.
- Determine thickness: The configurator displays available thicknesses for each mirror type.
- Enter width and height: always in millimeters.
- Check price: The configurator calculates the final price immediately.
- Add accessories: such as mounting brackets.
- Submit order: Production based on your dimensions begins afterward.
Adamer delivers all online mirrors exclusively with polished edges. The estimated delivery time is 5 to 7 business days. If you order multiple items together, the longest delivery time in your shopping cart applies.
Items not available for online order: drill holes, cutouts, rounded corners, or special shapes. Please use our contact form for these requests. For complete wall surfaces, take a look at our guide on custom mirror walls.
How is the price in the mirror configurator calculated?
The price of a custom mirror depends primarily on the area in square meters, the mirror type and thickness, and the edge processing per linear meter. Shipping costs are added depending on the format.
Many people wonder why two mirrors with the same surface area cost different amounts. The answer lies in the edges. The configurator calculates several components:
|
Price Factor |
What it depends on |
What you can influence |
|
Glass surface |
Width × height in m² |
Plan dimensions precisely |
|
Mirror type & thickness |
Silver, grey, bronze, antique; millimeters |
Choose thickness suitable for the size |
|
Edge processing |
Perimeter in linear meters |
Long, narrow formats have more edge |
|
Shipping |
Edge length and format |
Note shipping classes (see below) |
For example: A mirror measuring 1,000 × 500 mm has a surface area of 0.5 m² and 3 m of edge. A mirror measuring 2,500 × 200 mm also has a surface area of 0.5 m², but 5.4 m of edge. The narrow mirror therefore requires significantly more edge processing.
What are the most common mistakes when ordering mirrors online?
Most problems do not occur during shipping, but before clicking. We see these five mistakes again and again:
- Centimeters instead of millimeters: Entering “80” instead of “800” will result in a very small mirror.
- Rough dimensions instead of finished dimensions: Tiles, joints, or trim will reduce the space later.
- Special requests in the free text field: Drill holes or cutouts cannot be ordered online. Inquire about these beforehand.
- Overlooking shipping limits: A few millimeters can determine the shipping method.
- Planning on returns: Custom goods are generally excluded from the right of withdrawal.
Tip: Check the order summary before submitting. Read the width and height out loud. This sounds trivial, but it prevents the most expensive mistakes.
How is a large mirror shipped?
Small and medium-sized mirrors are sent via standard shipping, while formats larger than 1,200 × 1,000 mm are shipped by a freight carrier. Adamer currently delivers only within Germany.
With glass, shipping is a key purchasing criterion. According to a Bitkom study, shipping and delivery are very important to 53% of online shoppers when choosing a shop. This is especially true for fragile goods.
At Adamer, the shipping method is based on the format:
|
Shipping Class |
Format |
Shipping Method |
|
Small glass products |
up to 600 mm edge length |
Standard shipping |
|
Medium glass products |
up to 1,200 × 1,000 mm |
Standard shipping |
|
Large glass products |
over 1,200 × 1,000 mm |
Freight carrier |
Current shipping costs can be found in the shopping cart and in the shipping terms.
Here is how to use shipping classes to your advantage:
- Just over the limit? Check if a few millimeters less would also fit.
- Large area? Two mirrors side-by-side can be cheaper and easier to install.
- Keep weight in mind: The rule of thumb is 2.5 kg per millimeter of thickness per square meter. A 6 mm mirror measuring 1.5 m² weighs about 22.5 kg. Our guide on calculating glass weight explains more.
- Plan for freight delivery: Ensure there is a clear path and a second person to help carry it.
What should I do if the mirror arrives damaged?
Glass is sturdy, but not indestructible. That is why a quick check right at your doorstep is worth it. In principle, the seller bears the transport risk for online purchases until the item is handed over to you, as the Consumer Center of Lower Saxony explains.
Your checklist upon delivery:
- Inspect packaging: Is it dented, wet, or torn?
- In case of visible damage: Refuse acceptance in case of doubt or have the damage noted on the delivery receipt.
- After unpacking: Check the mirror for cracks, edge damage, and scratches.
- Document the damage: Take photos of both the packaging and the mirror.
- Report immediately: Contact us in writing via email.
This allows damage to be resolved quickly and without debate.
Does the right of withdrawal apply to custom-made mirrors?
Generally, no. For goods manufactured according to your individual specifications, the statutory right of withdrawal is excluded.
Many shops only mention this point in the fine print. Yet it is crucial for your planning. According to § 312g (2) No. 1 BGB (German Civil Code), there is no right of withdrawal for goods that are not prefabricated and are tailored to the consumer's personal needs. A mirror with your requested dimensions falls exactly into this category.
The reason is logical: A dealer can hardly resell a mirror measuring 873 × 1,142 mm. The Bavarian Consumer Information System explains this logic in detail. According to a 2020 ruling by the ECJ, this exclusion applies even if production has not yet begun (e-recht24).

How do I recognize a high-quality mirror upon delivery?
A high-quality mirror features a uniformly polished edge without chips, a distortion-free reflection, and a flawless coating. For silver-coated float glass mirrors used indoors, DIN EN 1036-1 sets the standards.
The standard DIN EN 1036-1 defines requirements and testing procedures for these mirrors. However, a few simple steps are enough for you to check at home:
- Edge: Run your finger along it. It should be smooth and even.
- Reflection: Check from a distance of about one meter. Straight lines in the room should remain straight.
- Surface: Look at the glass at an angle in daylight. This is the best way to spot scratches.
- Dimensions: Measure width and height with a tape measure and compare them with your order.
Exception for antique mirrors: Stains and patina are intentional here. Each piece is unique.
By the way, there is genuine manufacturing behind every custom mirror. According to the Federal Association of the Glass Industry, flat glass finishing in Germany generated 3.88 billion euros in revenue in 2025. Adamer has been part of this industry as a Bavarian family business since 1857.
Ordering custom-made mirrors online without surprises
Ordering custom-made mirrors online saves time and effort. The decisive factor, however, is what happens around the order process. Check your entries in millimeters, keep an eye on shipping classes, and inspect the delivery immediately. Also, remember: custom goods are excluded from the right of withdrawal.
Shopping online has long been a part of daily life for most people; according to the Federal Statistical Office, about 85% of internet users aged 16 to 74 shopped online in 2025. With this knowledge, your mirror order will be a home run instead of a gamble.
